Mitología, Magia y Misterio en el Mundo Hispano

• This semester we studied and explored various myths, legends, and stories of magic from the Spanish-speaking world.  We read a full mini-novel in Spanish:  El Ekeko: Un misterio boliviano.  Read my description below of the book.

• El Ekeko: Paco a thirteen year old living in La Paz, Bolivia, finds a magical doll named El Ekeko and uses the doll to his advantage. Throughout the novel, Paco encounters many problems including misfortune with the Ekeko and dealing with two antagonists, Nicolas and Mateo. 
  
  
• Reflections on Bolivian culture:  
  • We learned a lot about Bolivia culture over this unit. We found many differences in our society when comparing. Many, many different people in Bolivia make a living by selling various products on carts in the streets. Most in Bolivia begin work at a young age to support their families, a common job for children has been mining, as Bolivia is a mountainous place. Las Alasitas is a cultural event I enjoyed learning about. Las Alasitas is a party on January 24 in La Paz, Bolivia. The event honors the Ekeko. For this festival they like to display miniature things. People in Bolivia value many things including family and work, but also art and music. 
• Personal Reflection*:  

• ​​I feel I grew in a few ways over this unit. Throughout the unit I felt insecure speaking multiple sentences in Spanish. By the end of the unit I was pushed to be ready to speak multiple sentences fluently in spanish for my final. When really thinking about all the words I know, I found I can create well put together sentences, specifically related to the El Ekeko novel. I found many things interesting during this unit especially learning about Bolivian culture and how they live compared to us. I enjoyed learning about the work in Bolivia. With many mountains surrounding the cities, a common job many children and adult have is mining. In the mines many like to chew coca leaves, giving them energy, similar to the drug cocaine which comes from the coca leaves. 
• Final writing project: For my final writing project I wrote 5 diary entries from the prespective of Paco, the main character of El Ekeko.

  Martes, el siete de Febrero
  Un día, el sábado, yo quiero ir al centro para caminar en la calle. Yo necesito lustrar botas en la dia porque yo quiero comer una buena comida en el centro de La Paz. Pero, en la mañana mi mama me dice que tengo que comer desayuno con mis hermanas, Sofi, Mari, y Juli. Estoy triste porque no quiero estar en casa. Pero, voy al centro mañana.
  
  Viernes, el diez de Febrero
  Me gusta mucho el fútbol. Yo siempre quería jugar videojuegos pero jugar fútbol es bueno para mí. Los zapatos nuevos que yo recibí del ekeko son muy buenos para jugar fútbol. Después, voy a la escuela y hoy fui con Pepe al parque para jugar fútbol. Estoy muy agradecido por mi amigo Pepe. 
  
  Miércoles, el veintidós de Febrero
  Hoy no es un buen día en la escuela. El día es muy largo. Primero, Nicolàs y Mateo me acusan de caminar a la escuela tarde. Después de la mañana, yo no tengo comida durante la hora del almuerzo. Después del almuerzo escribimos mucho y no me gusta escribir ahora quiero dormir. 
  
  Sábado, el veintiséis de Febrero
  Esta noche yo ayudé a mi mamá a hacer la comida por la cena. Me gusta comer arroz y frijoles mucho, pero mi familia y yo comimos mucho arroz y frijoles. Yo estoy emocionado de comer el bistec cuando el ekeko me da el bistec. Voy a escribir otra vez cuàndo yo como el bistec. 
  
  Miércoles, el primero de Marzo
  Yo estoy muy agradecido por mi familia y esto es porque. Mi mamá trabaja mucho por mi familia y mi mamá hace mucha comida buena. Mi mamá me da mucho amor. Yo estoy agradecido por mi papá porque él trabaja mucho por mi familia. Yo estoy agradecido por mis hermanas porque ellas son muy bonitas y divertidas. Yo amo a mis hermanas.
